University Presbyterian Church

University Presbyterian Church required a replacement facility after their worship/education building was destroyed by a fire.  The church congregation came to Studio D Architects with a very detailed and clear vision about how they wanted to worship in their new building.  The program called for a 500-person capacity Sanctuary, a large Narthex which would also serve as the fellowship hall until later plans could be completed, and support facilities such as restrooms, storage, and nursery space.  The interior of the building reflects the beliefs and feelings described in the congregations’ mission statement.  With exposed glue-laminated beams, the church soars from 12 feet at the back to 30 feet above the pulpit at the apex of the A-frame structure which was in keeping with the forms of other existing buildings on the site.  The design and use of the clear open plan allows the entire congregation to be within 50 feet of the pulpit and allows all to participate and all to be heard without the use of microphones or other amplifying devices.
